On-camera interviews with five early MLC students, by Paty Baum
Paty Baum, Sam Lowry
IN 2003, with MLC's earliest days 35 years in the past and starting to fade, alumna Paty Baum set out to record a series of on-camera interviews with original teachers and her fellow early students, to capture their memories and the essence of the formative era. In 2004, Paty joined portions of her interviews with still images to create an excellentshort documentary.
The full original interviews are themselves enlightening records, of the time and of their subjects' experiences. Four of these, with fellow students, appear here. Sarah Berry (1968-77), Chena (Taylor) Weitzer and Kelly Sax (1968-75), Jeana Edelman (1968-72), and Craig Mayther (1968-71) bare their souls, quite substantially, discussing everything from influential teachers and mixed-age classes, to grappling with science and math, to self-reliance and broken homes, to travels and having power as a kid, to lifelong friendships, solo explorations, drug use and danger.
