Pete Lowry's Shaw Story

MY MEMORIES of Shaw Island ....
I went there twice for summer camp and took another trip one time with Eric Mick and some others. I’m not sure I remember which memories are from which trip [for Pete's photos from the first (pre-Cedar-Rock) MLC trip to the San Juans, click here].
The bracelets are something I particularly remember—what a great idea! My father gave my brother Sam and me some army patches, probably from our grandfather, the cloth ones that attach to shoulders and such, and I think of the colorful decorations on military uniforms, which are the closest things to the ribbons of tape on bracelets that you got for doing things at Shaw. I think that may be where John Angell got the idea.
I remember the building or buildings and the rocky area and grassy path down to the shore, and I recall just going off there by myself and sitting, enjoying the view and the quiet. That was really a pleasant and peaceful place.
I also remember the bus rides to and from Shaw Island and the feeling of community, and also a sense of anticipation. I don’t remember particular conversations or people, but I remember the vibe, and the ferry rides.
Those are the things that stick in my mind.
