Eric Mick's Shaw Story

4/9/2026

SHAW ISLAND. There's a subject. That camp was so loose it's amazing no one got sued. But it was sooo fun! The property was ultimately donated to one of the state universities. And the buildings were razed. I visited a few years ago and looked all over for some kind of camp artifact. All I could find was a piece of plywood from one of the outhouse seats, which is actually a pretty good historical bit.

That steamboat the "Oceanid" was fabulous. I think Bob brought it from the UK where it was a harbor launch. He added a beautiful fantail stern. It was later donated to the Seattle Sea Scouts. At some point I heard that somebody donated some transformer oil for free fuel. Uh oh, PCB contamination. A few years ago, John Scharf showed it to me at a moorage on Lake Union. It was in terrible dilapidated condition, I would assume unrepairable.
