Delia (Lane) Paine's Shaw Story

4/9/2026

A FEW memories:

I got sick with a sore throat at Shaw Island and got to sleep inside in a bedroom for a couple of days. It was both a treat and an honor, but I was also alone and removed from everyone. John Angell would walk past the window outside and stop to sing to me, “How much is that doggie in the window ….” I'll never forgot what it felt like to have him notice and shine his light on only me for a few moments.

Rose Hips, the biting pig, scared me.

Slept outside with Caitlin Maynard and was blown away by the shooting stars and Milky Way. Getting more tape on our bracelets sure was such a motivator.

Saw a Man of War jelly fish that we were told to stay back from.

Loved the startling sound of the ferry horn.

John singing, “Where are we going? I don’t know. When will we get there? I ain’t certain. All I know is we are on our wayyyy.”

John answering the question, “What time is it?”: “Half past kissing time! Time to kiss again !!"
