Posts honoring the small group of educators who founded MLC
IN THE SUMMER of 1967, the idea for the Metropolitan Learning Center was born. In Fall 1968 it became a reality, thanks to the vision and effort of five teachers, one principal, one office-everything, two dedicated aides—one a teacher's spouse, one a mom—and a scattering of other aides, volunteers, and parents, who played smaller roles but who remain in our hearts. In Fall 1969 these nine originators were joined by a sixth full-time teacher, a teaching aide dedicated to the dramatic arts, and a University of Oregon PhD candidate—also an MLC dad—there to study non-coercive education.
