Dr. EMMANUEL M. “MANNY” BERNSTEIN, Jr., was an honorary MLC originator for his scholarly attention, between 1969 and 1972, to the education revolution that created MLC. A University of Oregon doctoral candidate in Counseling Psychology, he made MLC his place of work conducting field research on “non-coercive teaching” in the mold of the English free school Summerhill. Manny's remarkable dissertation, A Handbook for Living and Teaching with Freedom, brings to the light his fellow-MLC-originators’ thoughts and ideas (and features drawings by an 11-year-old David Chelsea). Manny was also a dad, whose two daughters attended MLC.
