Jason Lynch

1958-2020 (at MLC 1968-76)

Jason Lynch gave an extraordinary level of service to the [Sierra Club's] Angeles Chapter. Jason ... provided his service, experience and expertise to a number of sections and committees—inspiring, encouraging and mentoring countless new and seasoned outdoor enthusiasts over many years. He served on the Wilderness Adventures Section Management Committee beginning in 1998 and volunteered as the Section’s Outings Chair from 1994 to 2015—an impressive 21 years. During this time, he scheduled more than 2,700 outings, including holiday weekend bus trips to national parks and other special locations. From 1996 to 1999, Jason served as an instructor for the Beginning Backpacking Class and assisted with Navigation Practice hikes from 1996 to 2012. He also served as a very skilled Assistant Group Leader for the Wilderness Travel Course (WTC) from 1999 to 2006. In 2003, Jason was a founding member of the Chapter's Outings Management Committee, and served on the OMC until 2007 and then again in 2013. Jason became ... M-rated in 2002 and led, co-led, assisted or evaluated over 190 Club outings. In recognition of his commitment and service to the Angeles Chapter’s outings program, in 2005 Jason was awarded the Chapter's highest honor for an outings leader, the Chester Versteeg Outings Award. JASON LYNCH attended MLC from 1968 to 1976. Having grown up in Northwest Portland, just a few blocks away, he attended Couch School before MLC and so became part of MLC's inaugural class. After graduating from MLC, Jason earned a degree in Theatre Arts from PSU and during his Portland years was active with the Ladybug Theater and other companies. Around 1982 he moved to Los Angeles where he had a nearly forty-year career doing scenic design for movies and television. He worked on the film Trouble In Mind starring Chris Christofferson, filmed in Seattle, and on TV series including Roseanne, Malcolm in the Middle, Grey's Anatomy, and The Mindy Project.

During his LA years Jason was very active with the Sierra Club, his service detailed in the piece below that originally appeared on the Club's website.

Old friends got to see Jason when he attended the MLC 50th Anniversary in 2018. He died in LA on May 5, 2020, at age 61.

From Facebook:

I am incredibly sad to hear .... Jason was a close friend of mine in high school and I was so happy to see him at the 50 Year celebration. I am so grateful we had a moment to talk while we were there. I appreciated his humor and artistry back in HS .... [K]now you were held in deep regard and affection. (Kristel McCubbin)

I am so sorry .... I adored Jason: his calm, his wry observations, his kindness. (Eileen Brokaw)

No words, just shock and deep sadness. I hadn't heard from him for some time. I tried to get him to respond. I had no idea he was ill. I loved him very much. (Michele Earley)

One of the first people I met, first day at MLC, John Angell's room. He was sitting on the top of a bookshelf, like Kermit the frog. We were drama geeks together in Michele Earley's class. I adored him and his odd energy in the way kids adore each other .... I had no idea he lived here in LA! It would have been fun to know him as a grownup. (Anny Celsi)
